The man who had a boy named Elian Gonzalez ripped from his family in Miami at gunpoint and returned him to Cuba now thinks that President Donald Trump shouldn’t deport drug criminals back to their countries.
In a commencement speech at Hobart and William Smith Colleges this weekend, the former president slammed Trump for the deportation of William Perez Jr., an Army veteran who was sent back to Mexico after being convicted of a drug offense.
According to the , Perez had handed an undercover police officer a laptop case full of cocaine and ended up serving half of a 15-year prison term. When he got out, his criminal conviction meant he was slated to be deported.
“It kind of embarrasses me that we let a person risk his life for us and then kicked him out,” Clinton said during his speech, according to .
“A guy that does two combat tours in Afghanistan, risks his life for the rest of us,” he continued. “Whether you approve of what we’re doing there or not, he did things that most Americans don’t do. And he got taken off the street and sent home the other day.”
It’s worth pointing something here. First, Perez was released in 2015; Donald Trump wasn’t president then. In fact, the president at that point was a man from the city 二元期权 where Perez was arrested — Chicago. The deportation statutes were entirely the same then, and non-naturalized citizens were still sent back after being convicted of a crime.
Surely if the Democrats wanted to take an interest in the case, that would have been the time to do it, via clemency or a pardon. After all, Barack Obama was pretty keen on clemency.
Here’s the full speech, for those of you with strong stomachs:
Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and the Democrats don’t care a whit about keeping Perez in the United States. What they do care about is tying a sob story about a convicted drug dealer whose crimes have been glossed over to Trump’s immigration policies — after they’ve washed their own hands of all responsibility, of course.
The former president failed to see the relevance during the speech, in which there were plenty of meaningless platitudes delivered in soaring language, all with the aim of painting Republicans as a modern-day group of Blue Meanies.
“Every single day we should each find a way to expand the definition of ‘us’ and shrink the definition of ‘them,’” Clinton said. “Because, in the end, there’s not enough difference to spend our life fretting about it.”
How did Bill Clinton “expand the definition of ‘us?’”
Oh, yeah, that way. He took a child whose mother had died on the brave trip over from communist Cuba and ripped the boy out of his family’s arms at gunpoint back in 2000.
Nice work. But please, tell these students how they need to “expand their definition of ‘us,’” Mr. Clinton. They’ll probably see through the hypocrisy, but at least they’ll be able to say they received their degrees after sitting through a speech by the world’s most famous serial liar.
