JUST IN: Americans everywhere were stunned on Monday when it was announced that President Donald Trump would be attending the White House Correspondent’s Dinner, but not everything was what it seemed.
Daily Mail reported that White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders backtracked moments ago, saying that “no decision has been made” yet as to whether Trump will attend the April event. Earlier in the day, Sanders had responded “yes” when asked directly about whether Trump would attend the dinner.
After the story was broken, however, Sanders corrected herself, saying, “really sorry, totally misread your email. No decision has been made on WHCA dinner. We confirmed Gridiron only.”
Trump skipped both dinners last year, as they’re both hosted by journalistic institutions and he was warring with the so-called “fake news.” He proudly announced his decision to skip last year’s dinner on Twitter.
“I will not be attending the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner this year,” Trump wrote. “Please wish everyone well and have a great evening!”
This marked the first time a sitting president missed the dinner since President Ronald Reagan in 1981, who couldn’t attend because he was in recovery from being shot.
This comes after the White House made the shocking announcement on Sunday night that President Donald Trump will be supporting a push to improve the nation’s system of background checks for would-be gun buyers, days after the shooting massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
Fox News reported that White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said that Trump talked to Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn on Friday about a bill the Texas Republican had introduced alongside Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., which would “improve federal compliance with criminal background check legislation.”
“While discussions are ongoing and revisions are being considered, the president is supportive of efforts to improve the federal background check system,” Sanders said.
